MY INSPIRATION.....

At Good Earth, we are in love with great coffee. That's why we have made it our mission to make each and every cup of coffee we serve, a great cup of coffee.

We are passionate about the quality of our coffee. We are committed to acquiring and sharing coffee knowledge. And we are committed to making environmentally and socially responsible decisions about the coffee we serve.

THINK GLOBALLY, DRINK LOCALLY.....

Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world. So, farming, processing, and consuming coffee have big implications… both socially and environmentally. The coffee we drink can make a difference in the world. At Good Earth, we have chosen to serve 100% Shade Grown and 100% Organic coffee. As well, all of our blends contain significant proportions of Fair Trade coffee. Our coffee is also 100% Arabica, a superior variety of coffee grown only at higher elevations. Arabica beans are naturally lower in caffeine and more complex in flavor than Robusta beans, making them a natural choice for Good Earth. Our commitment is to serve you the best coffee possible, while making sound environmental and social choices in coffee beans.

All of our coffee is roasted exclusively for Good Earth cafes and coffeehouses by Fratello Coffee Company of Calgary, Alberta. We have worked closely with this family-run roaster over the years, to ensure we are always serving the best coffee, the freshest coffee and the coffee truest to our social and environmental standards. We are proud to have worked with the Fratello family since we served our first cappuccino in 1991.

ORGANIC
Good for Growers, Good for You

All coffee is grown in a band of countries encircling the planet, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Coffee is grown and processed in a manner that uses a lot of water and people power. The fruit of the coffee tree is harvested by hand, as a cherry. After harvesting, the coffee cherry is processed or de-pulped by washing. This process produces a large amount of waste water, which enters the local streams and rivers of coffee-growing regions. It is often the same water that the communities of the region depend upon for basic needs. Organic coffee is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or chemicals. Because organic farms are not using these toxins, they do not end up in the wash water or water table. Likewise, the women, men and children who are picking the coffee beans by hand are not exposed to these toxins.
So, while drinking our 100% Organic coffee may be better for you, it is definitely better for the families growing, picking, and processing your coffee.

FAIR TRADE
Fair to Farmers

Coffee farms are often owned and operated by families, people young and old. Fair Trade coffee guarantees the farmer a fair and fixed price for their coffee, regardless of what the commodity market is doing. (Remember, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world!) With Fair Trade standards in place, a participating farmer can sell his or her coffee for a guaranteed price.

Simply put, giving farmers a Fair Trade price for their coffee means sustainability… for their farms, their way to make a living, their families, and their communities.

SHADE GROWN
Better for the Birds

Shade grown coffee grown under a diverse, indigenous forest canopy. The forest was not clear-cut to expedite coffee growing. Instead, the coffee trees are grown in a biodiverse environment, amongst the natural flora and fauna. A biodiverse environment is a healthier environment, an ecosystem in which water quality is better maintained. It is also the habitat in which many of North America’s migratory birds live during our winters.

Selecting our 100% Shade Grown coffee means protecting biodiversity in coffee growing regions. This includes the habitat of many of the beautiful songbirds that fly into our yards every spring. And what a lovely sign of spring they are!
